  1. Call PA One Call at 1-800-242-1776 or 811 at least 3 days before you dig.  There is no cost to you to call PA One Call before you dig.
  2. All underground utilities will be notified of your planned work and will mark the location of their facilities
  3. Respect the markings.
  4. Excavate with due care.  Report any and all damage to the appropriate utility.
Typical Houshold Excavations that Require Notification through PA One Call
  • Using a power auger to install a mailbox post, fence post or deck post.
  • Using any power equipment to install a sprinkler system, pet perimeter fence, septic tank, leech bed, sand mound or plant a tree.

You should also call PA One Call prior to installing a deck, porch, patio, garage or pool to make sure gas lines are not involved.

Warning Tape
warning tape.gif (5149 bytes)
Although not used on all pipelines, be alert for plastic warning tape which is typically installed just above a gas line.  If you encounter warning tape while digging, a gas line is nearby.  Excavate by hand using extreme caution.
Locator Wire
Wire used to locate underground plastic pipe.  Damage to the wire can make locating  pipelines more difficult.  Call if you cut, nick or pull out the wire.
Pipe Damage

Report any nicks or gouges to the coating of steel pipe even though the pipe may not be leaking.  Report any cuts or gouges made to plastic pipe during excavation.  Any damage to the pipe or coating can lead to leaks in the future.
